A day for Qatar-based filmmakers

DOHA: Films created by Qatar-based filmmakers take centrestage today at the Ajyal Youth Film Festival in Katara.
Ten films by citizens and residents will be screened in three segments of the Made in Qatar programme of the festival at 7.45pm at the Katara Drama Theatre.
The first segment will feature the works of winners from the Doha Film Institute’s 48-Hour Film Challenge, the second from the 7-Day Filmmaking Challenge, both of which were open to filmmakers from across Qatar, and the third which is the screening of Batal Wa Resalah (The Hero and the Message 2012), an Al Rayyan Productions film.
Commissioned by Al Rayyan Productionsto celebrate Qatar National Day 2012, The Hero and the Message is directed by Pawel Borowski, and narrates the fantastical tale of a Qatari brother and sister who travel back in time on the prototype of a futuristic train to witness the founding events of the Qatar in the 19th century. The screening will be followed by a Q & A session with the Qatari talents. Two winners of the third edition of the 48-Hour Family Film Challenge chosen through voting via social media outlets will be announced tonight followed by their screening.
Films to be screened chosen from the 7-Day Filmmaking Challenge include My Hero by Nora Al Subai, Sweet Violence by Dana An Natsheh, Al-Kora by Amal Al Muftah, One in Five by Jawaher Al Khater, Razfa by Ali Al Mehdi, Sonder by Ali Al Thani and Tooth Fairy by Shaikha Ali.
Today’s screenings also include The Pee-Wee 3D: The Winter that Changed My Life (8.15pm at Katara Opera House), Zip & Zap and the Marble Gang (2pm, Katara Opera House) and Justin and the Knights of Valour (5pm, Katara Opera House).the peninsula
