St Peter’s Knanaya Church, Doha, has condoled the passing away of Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas, the Patriarch of Antioch and All the East.
The 80-year-old Patriarch died in Germany a week ago after a prolonged illness. He was laid to rest on Friday at St Peter’s and St Paul’s Cathedral in Damascus, Syria.
The condolence meeting was held at the church after the Holy Mass on Friday and was attended by members of the parish as well as various spiritual organisations functioning under the church.
Vicar Rev. Fr. Jinu Mathews presided over the meeting, where a resolution of condolence was presented.
He said, “In this moment of grief, it’s our obligation to place our condolences in the holy memory of our Moran, who departed from earthly life and entered eternal life.” The vicar recalled the instrumental role played by the Patriarch in the allocation of land where the present Knanaya church in Doha was built.
“We’re deeply moved and saddened by the demise of our spiritual father. There was a special place for the Knanaites in his mind. The gratitude of our parish for Moran is beyond words,” he added.
Mor Ignatius led the church for 34 years. He was the 122nd Patriarch of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church.
