Doha: Rainwater piling on Corniche is due to the incompletion of works in the rainwater drainage network. Certain contractors and consultants did not follow instructions on preparation for the rainy season and necessary measures will be implemented, Dr Eng Saad Al Muhannadi, Ashghal’s President, said today.

There were many videos shared on social media showing water-logged parts of Corniche Street after the heavy sudden downpour on Thursday early morning, with many people wondering what caused the same.

Explaining what happened on a rainy morning  Ashghal President clarified in a series of posts on Asghal’s Twitter handle that

“Recently, Qatar spent generously on a rainwater drainage network for Expressways. A network has certain capacity. If rain volume is higher than such capacity, water piling is normal, to be automatically drained through network; but ample time is required.

“The amount of rainfall of last Thursday equals the amount of rainfall that occured on Oct 2018, although its effect did not exceed 6% from the same locations affected in 2018 proving the efficiency of the drainage network that was implemented and completed.”

On Thursday Ashghal had announced that rainwater detention at Corniche and Ras Abu Abboud Intersection is due to the site falling within Corniche, Midtown Doha development project works and efforts are underway to complete and initiate rainwater drainage network project.,

“Unusual rain expected in future years. We work arduously to reduce any impact. Yet, a network has certain capacity and design capability. Heavy rain leads to water accumulation, to be automatically drained through network; however, ample time is required,” Dr Eng Saad Al Muhannadi said.

“During heavy rain, piled dust causes blockage in rainwater drainage networks, impacting water draining functionality. Areas without rainwater drainage networks use operational solutions. But efficiency is limited & longer time is consumed to pump out water.

“I am proud of Qatari and expatriate staff in Ashghal on all levels; infrastructure implementation, prompt emergency response or any other services. We are responsible and committed to providing services up to all expectations and we do not seek any excuses,” he concluded.
