Doha: Qatar Academy hosted a series of “Back-to-School” nights for parents of Primary and Senior students from grades KG to 12 this week. “This is an excellent opportunity for parents to find out what their children will be learning about this school year,” says Senior School Assistant Principal Timothy Chute. “Parents will be given an overview of the different classes taught at QA and there is also an opportunity for parents to introduce themselves to their child’s teachers”.
As the school’s student body continues to grow, annual events such as this become more valuable to both parents and teachers.
“Parents visit the classrooms, meet with the teachers and get an overview of the classroom programme for the year and know what the children will be learning,” Joneen Walker, an Assistant Principal at the Primary School, explains. “The teachers will suggest ways of how they can support their child’s learning at home. They will also be introduced to the classroom blog and how this tool can be used in sharing children’s work”.
For KG teacher Andre Jay, who has been at the school for three years, the back to school nights allow him to form an important partnership with parents by letting them know what to expect during library, PE, and Islamic/Arabic studies and other learning experiences. He also said that once his class was settled in, parents could expect a lot of fun from the KG curriculum. “We do a lot of cooking in my classes. Our first project will be a unique way to make popcorn,” said Jay. “It’s about keeping the kids busy and active during the day while they are learning to read, write and even do math. You may notice that they come home tired and they may need a nap,” he continued with a smile.
