DOHA: Qatar University (QU) has featured for the first time in Times Higher Education World University Rankings in the 601-800 group and scored the highest for International Outlook among all universities this year.
The ranking features universities in 70 countries, with 29 new countries included this year. They include Qatar, Indonesia, Malaysia, Ghana, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Latvia, Oman and Ukraine.
Phil Baty, Editor, Rankings, said, “Qatar is one of several countries to have made its debut in this year’s rankings. The achievement is in part due to expanding the ranking to include 801 universities and 70 countries.” The rankings are partly based on publication and citation data from Elsevier’s Scopus, the world’s largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature, and include analytics from SciVal, Elsevier’s tool to calculate comparative research metrics.
Iran dominates the region with eight universities in the top 800. Egypt and Saudi Arabia top among Arab countries with three universities each, Jordan and the UAE (two each), Qatar, Lebanon, Morocco  and Oman (one each), among top 800.
South Africa continues to lead the way in Africa, with six institutions among top 800, including University of Cape Town, the continent’s only top 200 ranked institution (joint 120th).
The continent has some new entrants, including Makerere University (Uganda) which has made it into the 401-500 group, and University of Ghana, University of Ibadan (Nigeria) and University of Nairobi (Kenya) in the 601-800 band.
