DOHA: ExxonMobil Qatar is promoting science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education as a key enabler for progress at the 2013 WISE.
With 18,000 engineers and scientists and 2,000 PhDs at the centre of its operations, ExxonMobil is convinced that increasing proficiency in STEM subjects is critical to building an innovative, diversified and competitive workforce.
“At ExxonMobil, engineering and technology are at the heart of our business, and this is also true for many industries in Qatar. Innovations in medicine, transportation, infrastructure, and communications technology will all play important roles in the growth of the country. Ultimately, people with strong foundations in math and science will be the drivers of these innovations for the benefit of Qatar,” said Bart Cahir, President and General Manager of ExxonMobil Qatar Inc.
To address this challenge in Qatar, ExxonMobil is partnering with Qatar University to help educators motivate students in math and science by enhancing their innovative teaching skills. Through Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy, about 80 math and science teachers from primary grade classrooms in Qatar’s Independent schools will have participated in this professional development programme by the end of 2013, impacting 2,400 students and directly supporting the country’s goal of building the capacity of its national workforce and realising the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030.
