DOHA: The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), Qatar Section, chaired by Sheikh Faisal Bin Fahad Al-Thani of Maersk Oil Qatar, held the first steering committee meeting of the year at Maersk Oil Research and Technology Centre (MO-RTC).
“It’s such a great opportunity to host SPE Qatar Section Steering Committee at MO-RTC. SPE is well known of being the largest individual-member organisation serving managers, engineers, scientists and other professionals worldwide in the upstream segment of the oil and gas industry. As an industry we play an important role to enhance SPE members industry experience and to help them achieve their true potentials” said Jassim Al Khori, SPE Qatar Section Deputy Chair, and MO-RTC Technical Manager.
Committee members had a tour through MO-RTC laboratory and listened to a presentation about the centre. MO-RTC in Qatar — Maersk Oil’s first global research and technology centre — supports the aim of maximising Al Shaheen field’s long-term production potential. The pioneering work that takes place in the centre will help to improve oil recovery rates by focusing on research that creates practical and applicable solutions to clearly defined problems in oil and gas production.
The centre is a part of 10-year, $100m investment in applied research in Qatar. With its focus on increasing oil recovery and protecting the marine environment, MO-RTC will continue to pioneer new technologies and harness the best talent to support the same. Through close collaboration between academia and the energy sector, the centre will help develop the capabilities of Qatar’s people and institutions, support Qatarisation and ensure a competitive, diversified and knowledge based economy. MO-RTC embodies the commitment to a sustainable development and achieving the objectives of the Qatar National Vision 2030.
During the meeting, SPE Qatar Section Strategic Plan and Event Schedule were discussed in length among many other topics. The SPE has more than 124,000 members in 135 countries participate in 190 section and 295 university chapters and they are united by the SPE vision to enable the global oil and gas exploration and production industry to share technical knowledge needed to meet the world’s energy needs in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.
