DOHA: Silatech, Bedaya Center and Maersk Oil recently launched the Career Development Forum, the first of a series of forums to take place in Doha on an annual basis.

The two day event was launched to raise awareness on the importance of career development, highlighting the challenges that face the human resource professional and providing practical solutions to them by acting as a platform to share local and international experiences.

Reem Al Thani, Qatar Country Representative, Silatech said: “Silatech sees employability, job creation and job advancement important in the development of youth and therefore the advancement of any society. We have not only supported youth in creating their own opportunities, but are helping young Arabs make successful transitions into the job market.

“Among our efforts to support the labour market include putting in place special programme called “Tamheed” to help new employees identify their specific skills and preferences and match them with the right career. With our and other institutions’ efforts, we look forward to reducing the unemployment numbers in the Mena which currently stand at a high of 25 percent,” added Reem.

Abdulaziz N Al Khalifa, Executive Director of Strategy and Business Development, Qatar Development Bank, said: “Career planning for the future is nowadays the responsibility of every stakeholder involved in the recruitment process. Employers are expected to provide their employees with strong opportunities for growth and development in line with their career aspirations by pinpointing the most suitable positions within the related workplace. Having said that, we still notice that most of today’s recruitment endeavours are still pretty much ad-hoc or unplanned. It is, therefore, essential to craft and allocate proper roles for the employer, the manager and the employee.”

Maersk Oil Social Investment Manager Faisal Al Medaihki commented, “We are delighted to have partnered with Silatech and the Bedaya Center for the First Qatar Career Development Forum. The forum has been a fantastic opportunity for the exchange of knowledge and best practice amongst the local HR community, including the establishment of a new professional network, and is making a real impact for the benefit of Qatar.”

According to Saleh Al Khulaifi – General Manager, Bedaya Center for Entrepreneurship and Career Development, said the main objective of the event is to bring human resource specialists and career counsellors together to discussion the best practices of building a comprehensive, multifaceted, and dynamic career development program in corporations.

“Many corporations have dysfunctional career development approaches that rely on personal judgment or incompetent method that doesn’t meet the new generation aspirations or respond to market dynamics or changes,” he said.
