Qatar’s preparations to host the historic FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 are in full swing with the Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) following an extensive plan to deliver a memorable event with an aim to maximise country’s long-term legacy in hosting major sporting events.
Qatar was awarded the hosting rights for the prestigious tournament in April last year. Doha, which has become a hub of sports, was selected after the International Basketball Federation’s (FIBA) Central Board was impressed by Qatar’s bid and particularly the elements around the compact geographical nature, unique flexibility with tournament venue scheduling to better serve the fans, as well as an emphasis on sustainability.
The FIBA delegation after a subsequent visit to the capital expressed its high confidence that Qatar will organise a highly successful global tournament when it will come to the Middle East and the North Africa region for the first time. The delegation was very impressed with venues which have the state-of-the-art facilities as the tournament matches will be played at Lusail Multipurpose Hall, Duhail Sports Hall, Ali Bin Hamad Al Attiyah Arena and the Aspire Academy.
Since the day Doha was given the hosting rights, the QBF started their preparations following wide-range programme to lift the sport domestically as well as bringing international competitions home. The QBF, in fact, is leaving no stone unturned as it looks to deliver a flawless edition of the global tournament.
In this regard, the QBF earlier this month played host to the FIBA West Asia Super League (WASL) Final 8 that featured the top teams from the FIBA WASL Sub-Zone Leagues. The competition, which also served as a precursor to the Basketball Champions League Asia in Dubai, turned out to be a huge success with all the stakeholders praising Qatar’s hosting prowess and hospitality. “This initiative is part of broader efforts to increase the sport’s popularity in the region and also aims to promote the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027,” President Mohammed Saad Al Mughaiseeb had said.
The WASL Final 8 event without a doubt showcased Qatar’s commitment to excellence and its capability to host major international sporting events. The QBF’s preparations to host the World Cup are also aligned with the hosting of Asian Games in 2023 as well as Olympics in the future. Additionally, Qatar’s domestic basketball also saw remarkable interest as teams displayed thrilling contests in quest for the coveted titles including the Amir Cup, Qatar Cup besides the league crown. The QBF is also in close touch with the local clubs strengthening collaboration and coordination to attain optimal outcomes both domestically and internationally.
