Admirable investment in cultural diplomacy

Qatar’s Years of Culture initiative, launched in 2012, is a wise move that positions the country as a serious partner in the realm of cultural diplomacy. Each year, Qatar partners with a different country to celebrate and exchange cultural experiences through art, music, food, and education.

The initiative is a carefully curated exercise in soft power and global engagement. Qatar’s Years of Culture initiative has now unveiled an ambitious fall programme dedicated to Argentina and Chile.

Running from September through December 2025, the season promises a rich tapestry of events spanning music, art, literature, film, cuisine, and sports, inviting Qatar’s diverse communities to explore the vibrant heritages of these South American nations.

The initiative, organized by Qatar Museums in collaboration with various local institutions, aims to bridge continents through creative exchanges. “Our fall season with Argentina and Chile is about sharing stories, ideas, and traditions that bring people closer together,” stated Years of Culture in a statement.

Kicking off in September, the program opens with a musical highlight at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) on the 14th. The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, under Argentine conductor Enrique Diemecke, will perform a cross-cultural concert featuring Astor Piazzolla’s “Concerto for Bandoneón ‘Aconcagua’” with soloist Victor Hugo Villena, alongside works by Argentine composers Esteban Benzecry and Alberto Ginastera.

Qatari talents Dana Alfardan and Nasser Sahim will add contemporary Arabic influences, blending cinematic and traditional elements.

In a region often defined by geopolitical tensions and rapid economic transformations, Qatar has chosen to invest in the language of culture—a universal medium capable of transcending borders, politics, and ideology through this initiative of Years of Culture.

For a country that is modernizing rapidly, Years of Culture also offers Qataris—especially the younger generation—a way to engage with the world without losing their own identity. It reaffirms the idea that cultural exchange doesn’t mean cultural erosion; instead, it enriches both sides of the dialogue.

Recently, Kalila wa Dimna exhibition was also inaugurated in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, as part of the participation of the Qatar Reads initiative, which operates under the umbrella of Qatar National Library (QNL), in the Qatar-Argentina 2025 Year of Culture. The exhibition features 12 new miniature-style artworks created by Qatari artist Wadha al-Athba.

In a global landscape where misunderstandings and polarisation are increasingly common, Qatar’s investment in cultural diplomacy is timely and admirable. The Years of Culture initiative goes beyond tourism promotion or national branding; it is a platform for building empathy and shared narratives in a divided world.
