DOHA: The Translation and Interpreting Institute (TII) of Hamad Bin Khalifa University has announced that registration is open for its Sixth Annual International Translation Conference.
The event on March 23-24 at Qatar National Convention Center aims to explore translation as a key vehicle in the creation of knowledge and bridging gaps within and across cultures in and beyond the Gulf.
Examining the role of translation in the Arab ‘Renaissance’ (Al Nahda), Dr Daniel Newman, Head, Arabic Department, and Course Director, MA degree in Arabic-English Translation and Interpreting, University of Durham (UK), will give a keynote address on ‘The Beginnings of Arab(ic) Translation Theory in the Modern Age: The 19th Century Translation Movement Revisited’.
Participants will benefit from seminar choices, including ‘Audio Description: The Visual Made Verbal’ in which Dr Joel Snyder, Director, American Council of the Blind’s Audio Description Project, and a pioneer in his field, will discuss making theatre events, museum exhibitions, media, and art accessible to the visually-impaired.
Four workshops will focus on challenges facing translators in the fields of politics, sports, literature and the media.
From 58 abstracts TII has received, 22 panellists have been selected from Egypt, Qatar, Spain, the UK, the UAE, Serbia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Sweden, Algeria, Palestine and the US.
Dr Amal Al Malki, Executive Director, TII, said, “The conference has become a hub for scholarly exchange, professional development and networking.
“We have created an international forum here on translation and interpreting that cuts along various disciplines, generating timely discussions on issues such as inter-cultural communication, media and gender.
“This year’s forum is particularly exciting because of its relevance. We bring the Gulf to the equations and situate it in the bigger picture as an influencer and being  influenced by different linguistics, cultural and ideological flows.”
To make the conference accessible to all interested parties, there is no participation fee and keynote addresses, panels, workshops and seminars are open to the public.
