London: A woman was remanded in custody yesterday charged with murder after an eight-year-old girl was found dead in a block of flats.
The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was held after paramedics discovered an injured child at a property on Thursday.
Police were called to the scene in Chadwell Heath, east London, shortly after 11.30am. The girl was later pronounced dead.
The woman was taken to hospital in Romford for treatment for minor injuries and was arrested on suspicion of murder after being discharged.
She was remanded in custody during a short hearing at Barkingside magistrates court and will appear before a judge at the Old Bailey on Tuesday, court officials said.
The results of a postmortem examination on the child have yet to be announced.
The death is being investigated by the Metropolitan police’s homicide and major crime command, Scotland Yard said.
Hell’s Angels admit murder conspiracy
MONTREAL: Twenty-seven Hell’s Angels members have pleaded guilty to conspiracy to murder in part of a wide-ranging Canadian prosecution of the notorious motorcycle gang’s activities, officials said Friday.
More than 150 Hell’s Angels were arrested in 2009 after a major crackdown on five branches of the gang in eastern Canada.
Charges against them included murder, conspiracy to murder and drug-trafficking. Dozens of those arrested have since been released.
Several defendants have agreed to plead guilty ahead of a trial due to open in Montreal next Tuesday, officials said.
Among the five chapters of the gang targeted in the prosecution, 27 people have pleaded guilty to conspiracy to murder in exchange for sentences of up to 25 years in some cases.
Stolen parts behind Mexico train crash
MEXICO CITY: The derailment of a cargo train, which killed 11 migrants hitching a ride across southern Mexico, was caused by the theft of railroad parts, authorities said Friday. The accident was due to the “lack of continuity of the rail,” the transport ministry said in a statement.
Authorities also updated an earlier toll of nine dead. Another 18 Central American migrants were wounded in the tragedy.
The train known as “The Beast,” which carries migrants who pay smugglers to sit atop freight cars, careened off the track in a swampy and remote area of Tabasco state on Sunday. The train was believed to be carrying upwards of 250 migrants as it travelled slowly along a river before eight of 12 wagons packed with scrap metal flipped to their side.
Tabasco state authorities had initially blamed the derailment on speed and rain.
