DOHA: The expansion and development works of the nearly QR1bn Al Ruwais Port project will be completed by the year-end, local Arabic daily Al Sharq reported yesterday.
The engineering and construction works on the project, spread across an area of approximately 261,224sq m, was started in June 2010 under the supervision of Public Works Authority (Ashghal).
The project, worth QR936.8m ($257m), is to be executed in three phases – development of Al Ruwais Port (phase 2), marine facilities for fishing harbour, and miscellaneous facilities like warehouses, mosques, rest areas and a cafeteria.
Some of the main components of the port include: container berth, general cargo berth, dry and cold stores, control tower and inspection platform.
The port, located on the northern tip of the peninsula, will cater to the daily needs of fishermen and other users. It will be equipped with all kinds of modern safety and security measures including maintenance facilities for traditional dhows (commercial boats made-up of wood), gantry cranes for container handlings, RTG cranes, mobile cranes and forklifts.
It will also have buildings to house different government offices to run and administer the facility smoothly.
