Doha, Qatar: Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has taken steps to expand and bring expert mental healthcare closer to communities, making support more accessible for everyone.

Since late 2023, HMC has expanded its inpatient mental health services at Mesaieed General Hospital, now the main facility for adult care in a modern, therapeutic setting. Specialised and long-term services continue at Al Wakra Hospital, Muaither RCC2, and other HMC sites.

Chair of Mental Health at HMC, Dr. Majid Al Abdulla

“Our mental health services have expanded significantly in recent years, both in terms of the number of services available and the quality of care delivered,” Chair of Mental Health at HMC, Dr. Majid Al Abdulla said in a statement.

“HMC’s Mental Health Service is accredited by the Joint Commission International, reflecting our commitment to the highest standards of care. HMC has become a regional leader in mental health care, committed to supporting the needs of our population,” he added.

As part of its commitment to community-based care, HMC has partnered with the Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) to establish integrated mental health clinics in eight primary health centers. These integrated clinics allow patients to access psychiatric and psychological support alongside regular physical healthcare in a familiar, non-stigmatising setting. The clinics cater to a range of needs, including adult psychiatry, ADHD, and older adult mental health, and are delivered collaboratively by HMC and PHCC teams.

As part of the ‘Your Health, Our Priority’ campaign, experts from HMC’s Mental Health Service spoke to The Peninsula yesterday, sharing more details about wide range of services, skilled teams, and accessible care.

Director of Occupational Therapy Department, Hussain Ali BuHazaa

Director of Occupational Therapy Department, Hussain Ali BuHazaa said, “Our occupational therapy plays a vital role in all aspects of mental health, including inpatient, outpatient, and community services.”

“We provide therapeutic interventions—everything from meal preparation and vocational rehabilitation to helping patients reintegrate into their communities without obstacles.”

Occupational therapists also support patients with stress management, sleep hygiene, and daily routines, using techniques such as breathing exercises, coping strategies, and immersive social activities like Eid celebrations and Qatar National Day events. “We even use sensory integration therapy through a dedicated sensory room with reclining chairs, lighting, aromatherapy, and more to help patients relax. In addition, we’re using virtual reality to simulate real-life scenarios, helping patients manage fears or anxiety before facing them in the real world.”

BuHazaa emphasised that these services are particularly valuable for patients diagnosed with depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, eating disorders, and adolescents with challenging behaviors or autism. He also noted a cultural shift in the perception of mental health. “There is still stigma, yes, but over the past 10 to 15 years, it’s reduced thanks to awareness campaigns by the Ministry of Public Health and HMC. Now people are more informed and open to accessing mental health services.”

In addition to physical outpatient clinics, HMC has expanded its virtual care services. The National Mental Health Helpline (16000) offers immediate access to trained mental health professionals.

Patients can also attend follow-up psychiatric appointments remotely using secure telehealth platforms, making it easier for people to continue their care from home.

Specialist virtual services, such as the Women’s Mental Health Service, provide confidential support tailored to the unique needs of different patient group.

Consultant Psychiatrist and Clinical Lead for Women Mental Health Service Dr. Sazgar Hamad said “We have a virtual women’s consultation service that provides quick access to mental health support.

Just dial 16000 and select option four. Patients are assessed within 48 hours by a psychiatrist and supported by a multidisciplinary team.”

This service supports women facing a range of challenges—from exam stress to bereavement—and offers interventions lasting four to six weeks. Women who require ongoing care are referred to outpatient clinics at the Women’s Wellness and Research Center (WWRC), PHCC sites like Al-Saad and Qatar University, or inpatient units at Bayt Al Dhiyafah, and Mesaieed General Hospital.

“We also work closely with families and support systems,” Dr. Hamad added.

“Women often put on a brave face, sometimes at the expense of their health. Physical and mental health are interconnected. If you notice something isn’t right, speak up—ask someone if they’re okay. Early intervention prevents complications.”

HMC continues to conduct public awareness initiatives to reduce stigma and promote mental health literacy. “Over the past six to seven years, more women now reach out on their own,” she said.

“They feel confident that our services are confidential and supportive. Seeking help is a sign of strength.”

Outpatient mental health services are now available at multiple HMC locations including Hamad General Hospital, Al Wakra Hospital, Al Khor Hospital, Mesaieed General Hospital, Aisha Bint Hamad Al Attiyah Hospital, Hazm Mebaireek General Hospital, and Muaither Clinic.
