Ilker Baybars, dean of CMU-Q, presented participants with certificates.

Thirty executives from key Qatari organisations recently gathered at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar to participate in a two-day executive education course focusing on dynamic organisational leadership.

The participants came from organisations that Carnegie Mellon has built partnerships with, including the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics, the Permanent Committee for Drug and Alcohol Affairs, Ministry of Interior, Al Jazeera Media Network, RasGas, Qatar Finance and Business Academy, Al Faisal Holding, Ezdan Holding and Commercial Bank of Qatar.

The course, held at Carnegie Mellon’s campus, featured lectures by Thomas Emerson, professor in business administration, and Starling D Hunter, visiting associate teaching professor in business administration.

The event was closed by Ilker Baybars, dean of Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, who presented the participants with certificates and emphasised the importance of teaching new methodologies and practical tools to help with real business challenges.

“When it comes to corporate education, our mission is to disseminate practical, research-based knowledge and create a collaborative environment between Carnegie Mellon faculty and business leaders. Offering executive programmes to professionals in Qatar is an integral part of our commitment to the development of human resources in line with Qatar’s National Development Strategy 2011-2016.”

The programme develops organisational leadership skills needed to implement major capital projects in Qatar. Based on the work of American psychologist Daniel Goleman, the lectures highlighted key characteristics for a leader, detailing emotional intelligence alongside other valuable skills.

“In our evolving business industry, as managers, we need to improve our employee management strategies to ensure we are being as efficient as possible.” said participating professional Luai Bahder, Manager of IT Infrastructure at Al Jazeera Media Network.  “I participated because an educational institution was providing the courses rather than a commercial organisation; this assured me that the information coming out of these lectures would be credible,” he added.

The workshop is part of a series of executive training courses offered by Carnegie Mellon Qatar to develop working methods, improve job performance, and provide best practices in management.
