DOHA: Qatar Red Crescent visited Al Khor Model Kindergarten for Boys to educate children on how to act during a disaster as part of QRC’s ‘Safe School’ programme under the theme ‘Safe Behaviour, Less Risk and Effective Response.’
Teachers attended a lecture by a QRC medical trainer on first aid and psychological support during earthquakes, while children received theoretical training on how to evacuate a building.
A simulated evacuation scenario was implemented by students, teachers and administrative staff, who assembled at predefined assembly points, under the supervision of QRC Risk Reduction Team.
Students also received copies of ‘Prepared Child’ brochure sponsored by Oryx GTL.
“Oryx GTL adopts safety as a top priority, always seeking the highest safety standards among its staff and their families. By virtue of the ambitious approach, the company has recorded a zero risk rate for three consecutive years, a world-class achievement that only a few energy and industrial corporations can make,” said Hussein Mohamed Al Shemari, Public Relations Coordinator, Oryx GTL.
“Having made this achievement and ensured safety among staff and their families, we are looking forward to promoting this culture throughout society, particularly among children,” he said.
Funded and implemented by QRC in coordination with the host schools, the programme is conducted every Sunday at a Supreme Education Council (SEC) school, applying an all-day theoretical and practical training scheme with two breaks.
Booklets and fliers are distributed and a disaster simulation scenario is practised.
The programme aims to promote a culture of safe behaviour and societal risk management to prevent, reduce or properly deal with risks by developing experience and skills among youngsters. It also covers topics on safety and security of the members of society, raises awareness of the importance of environment protection among schoolchildren, teachers, administrative staff, bus supervisors, and parents; urges them to adopt safe behaviour as a lifestyle; and deepens their sense of responsibility for themselves and others.
