DOHA: A total of 994 Qatari students in US universities and colleges contributed $29m to the US economy in 2012-2013, reveals a report.
The estimates are from Carian College Advisors (CCA), an education consultancy specialising in US Admissions guidance, and are based on the latest 2013 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange, released by Institute of International Education in partnership with the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
Peter Davos, Managing Director, CCA, said: “The number of Qatari students in the US stood at 994 in the 2012-13 academic year. There is a rapidly increasing appetite among Qatari students for a US university education, given strong government financial support for them and recent large-scale investments in the education sector.”
The report of the independent not-for-profit organisation founded in 1919 reveals that the total number of international students in US colleges and universities reached a record 819,644 in the 2012-2013 academic year. The report says the economic contributions of 819,644 international students in US universities and colleges and their families were remarkable, as they supported 313,000 jobs and contributed $24bn to the US economy. “This represents a 6.2 percent increase in job support and creation, and nearly 10 percent rise in dollars contributed to the economy by international students overall in 2013 compared with 2012.
“Over the last 10 years, there has been a considerable rise in the number of GCC students in US universities, as the US education system offers an unparalleled undergraduate experience, centred on a flexible curriculum and diversity of choice. Qatar hosts many American, British and IB curriculum schools which are familiar with US Admissions officers. Qatar is experiencing a dynamic phase of growth, based largely on investment in education.
“We provide the link between Qatari students and US universities by providing personalised and independent advice that is impartial and realistic.”
