Doha: Qatar Charity (QC) has opened a model village to accommodate internally-displaced Syrians, in Idlib Province, north Syria.
The project, the first of its kind, will benefit 100 families or about 600 people at a cost of over QR1.7m, QC said in a statement.
Qatar Charity has already distributed 600 mattress, 600 blankets and 600 pillows — six of each — for every home and three community tents.
One tent is to be used for first aid, one as a school and the third as a mosque, and bathrooms for men and women.
QC Executive Director for International Development, Mohammad bin Ali Al Ghamdi, said: “The project is part of Qatar Charity’s work for Syrians displaced within the country to provide them with shelter and other essential services that preserve their dignity.
“The project also aims to improve the living conditions of the displaced and alleviate their suffering,” he added.
Al Ghamdi noted that QC is focusing on Syrians inside the country, establishing projects covering shelter, health and food.
He said over 70 percent of the aid to Syrian people had gone to internally-displaced Syrians.
He urged citizens and residents in Qatar to support QC in its plans to implement more such villages and double relief for Syrians, adding that the number of displaced Syrians had reached over four million.
A QC delegation visited Aleppo to deliver housing units to Syrian families and attend the ceremony to lay the foundation stone of the second village in collaboration with Turkish Humanitarian Relief Foundation.
