DOHA: More than 70 people yesterday attended the opening day of a two-day educational training course on media and journalism, organised by the Josoor Institute.
This marks the latest in a successful series of events designed to equip sports practitioners and professionals within Qatar and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region with the necessary skills and management capabilities to deliver major sporting tournaments successfully.
The introductory course titled, Media and Journalism: Best Practice for Major Events, features several workshop sessions to provide journalists and media professionals from Qatar and the region with practical, tangible advice and guidance on successfully planning and organising print, broadcast, digital and social media activities at sporting events.
Qatar is hosting an unprecedented number of major events in the coming years. Between now and the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the country will play host to tournaments in sports as varied as swimming, handball, athletics, amateur boxing, road cycling and gymnastics. The Josoor Institute is playing an important role in ensuring their success through educating, empowering and supporting talented sports and events practitioners and building outstanding and sustainable sports and events industries in Qatar and throughout the MENA region.
This latest course from the Josoor Institute will equip journalists, media professionals as well as providers of services to the media with a clear understanding of the media environment around a major event and how best to organise, manage and operate during such occasions. Speakers from some of the most highly respected international media organisations including AFP, BBC Sport, beIN Sports and Getty Images have joined a cast of national and regional media and public relations experts to share their insight and expertise.
One of the speakers at the course, Abdulla Al Mulla, Executive Director of Operations Research and Development at Qatar Foundation, said: “Qatar is preparing to host several key large-scale events over the next few years. These present a unique opportunity to energise our young people and create abundant new opportunities for social, human and economic development. But fulfilling our potential requires the right training and development, the transfer of knowledge and expertise from international professionals to our region, as well as the creation of new sports, tourism, hospitality and events enterprises. Through the work of the Josoor Institute we can revolutionise the sports and events industries of the Middle East and North Africa.”
Workshop sessions over the two days will cover a broad range of topics including first-hand perspectives and testimonials from media that have covered some of the world’s biggest sporting events in recent years. These include practical case studies from media organisations on their handling of major events including the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014 and the Sochi Winter Olympic Games.
