PTI leaders expected to decide on return to Parliament today

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Sunday was holding a key meeting of its core committee, which is expected to decide whether party leaders return to the National Assembly to attend a joint parliamentary session scheduled for Monday.

President Mamnoon Hussain, on the advice of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, had called the joint session on April 6 to discuss the crisis in Yemen and Riyadh’s request for Pakistani troops in the ongoing Saudi-led operation against Houthi rebels.

PTI lawmakers had resigned from the National Assembly after months of protests against alleged rigging in the 2013 general elections and what they termed as the government’s unwillingness to form a judicial commission probe the alleged electoral irregularities.

But the two sides finally came to a consensus last week when they signed an agreement on the formation of the commission. President Mamnoon Hussain on Friday also signed an ordinance for the formation of the commission.

The PTI leadership is expected to decide on the return of the party’s lawmakers to Parliament during its core committee meeting today (Sunday).

Sources earlier told Geo News that a majority of PTI lawmakers are in favour of returning to the National Assembly after promulgation of the ordinance. They are of the view that most of the demands of Imran Khan’s party have been met after promulgation of the JC ordinance, therefore, PTI should return to the parliament.

However, a few of the PTI MPAs have opposed the return, saying that the party should wait until the actual formation of the commission because only an ordinance has been promulgated until now.
