Doha: Parents of Qatar Academy students learned first hand what their children would be studying this school year through the Back to School sessions organised by the school recently. Three different sets of sessions for the primary school, senior school and Arabic and Islamic studies department were held with the administration team and teachers to provide information on subjects and curriculum, after-school activities, community and service programmes and other learning opportunities for the students.

Director Dr Eric Sands welcomed the parents.

The Back to School sessions also highlighted, among other things, the school’s information and eLearning, community and service (C&S) and experiential learning programmes.

The school’s eLearning platform is taught by a team of technology integration facilitators who work with students from primary to senior school on their e-portfolios, C&S activities and other curriculum requirements.

The experiential learning programmes — School Without Walls and Week Without Walls in the primary and senior schools, respectively — are much anticipated trips by the students every year. The trips are held as part of the International Baccalaureate’s mission of extending student learning outside the classroom walls.

According to senior school Principal Michael Hitchman, the number and quality of learning opportunities available to students serves as a motivation and challenge.

“Qatar Academy offers a myriad of activities outside of the classroom and at the start of every year, I challenge (senior school) students to make the most of the opportunities available to them,” he said.
