Doha: A five-year-old Australian boy suffered a fracture to his right leg when a child’s play area set up at the Crossroads Restaurant at the Renaissance Hotel near City Centre fell on him on Friday.
The child suffered ‘breaks to his tibia and fibia with one bone penetrating the skin’, a source close to the family of the child told this newspaper.
“He was taken to Hamad hospital where he underwent emergency surgery overnight. He is still under care at the hospital and will be for the coming days.” The source, who was present at the scene, said that the structure was not secured while the level of supervision was minimal.
“No member of the staff offered any form of first aid assistance to the injured boy. Patrons and the parents of the child had to take control until paramedics arrived,” he said.
An official from the Dubai-based media relations department of Marriott, which manages the Renaissance Hotel, told this newspaper on the phone that the hotel will launch an investigation.
“The health, safety and security of our guests and associates is always our primary concern and not for compromise. We are always focused on taking great care of our associates so they can in turn take great care of our guests.”
“As you would expect from a company of Marriott’s standing, we have excellent procedures in place to manage all situations including those which are accidents or matters of health,” the hotel management said in a statement.
