DOHA: A dedicated email account has been created by Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) for the public to consult experts on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) among children.

Also a website adhd.hamad.qa on ADHD was launched during a recent awareness workshop.

Symptoms of ADHD can become apparent in children as early as three years. Kids with ADHD demonstrate lack of interest in or indifference to their surroundings and find it difficult to consistently start and finish things. This can create problems in an educational setting, according to experts.

More than 60 social workers and educational professionals representing 20 schools attended the workshop. It was inaugurated by Dr Mohammad Al Janahi, Chair of HMC’s Paediatrics Department, and Dr Zahra Mejaly, Consultant for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Head of the ADHD Support Group.

Dr Mahmoud Fawzi, Paediatric Neurology Consultant at HMC, said ADHD was a behavioural disorder characterised by developmentally inappropriate inattentiveness, impulsiveness and hyperactivity.

Dr Mejaly stressed the importance of early detection and proper management of ADHD to help with management of the disorder. “HMC established a specialised clinic for the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD in 2012,” Dr Mejaly said. “We are planning another workshop in January 2014.”
