Fifth Youth Research Forum winners honoured

Doha: Qatar University Young Scientists Center (QU-YSC) concluded the Fifth Youth Research Forum 2023, under the theme ‘High Education Institutions and Their Role in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals.’

The hybrid ceremony honoured the winners of the forum in the presence of Minister of Education and Higher Education, H E Buthaina bint Ali Al Jabr Nuaimi; QU President Dr. Hassan Al Derham; Managing Director and CEO of Qatar Petrochemical Company (QAPCO) Dr. Mohammed Youssef Al Mulla, Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies Prof. Mariam Al Maadeed, and Director of QU-YSC Prof. Noora Al Thani.

This cycle of the Youth Research Forum had a wider range of participants from 16 countries. Submission of abstracts began in June 2022, with 276 received and 186 accepted. An evaluation committee consisting of professors specialized in various research fields from QU and the Ministry of Education and Higher Education reviewed 36 of the accepted abstract.

This forum is distinguished by the diversity of the research areas to expand the scope of participation with themes like, The quality of higher education as one of the sustainable development goals and a way to consolidate its concepts; The theme of legal legislation aimed at consolidating the concepts of sustainable development and achieving its goals; and The scientific research theme as a means to consolidate concepts and achieve the sustainable development goals.

A group from the QU College of Dental Medicine, won first place for Best Poster for their research named ‘Association between oral health and gastric cancer: A systematic review.’ Second place went to a group from the QU College of Engineering, and College of Education, for their research entitled ‘Assessment Models used in Informal STEM Learning.’ In third place was Maria Nazir, Department of Electrical Engineering, Institute of Space Technology (IST) Islamabad Pakistan for her research ‘Brain Tumor Analysis of Gliomas with Uncertainty Estimation in MRI Images.’

The winner for Best Research was awarded to Tasneem El Sayed and her research ‘Design, Synthesis and Molecular Modeling of Quinazoline Derivatives as a Dual Kinase Inhibitors Targeting EGFR and VEGFR-2.’ Second place winner went to Zahra Al Mahrooqi, College of Science, Sultan Qaboos University, Muscat, Oman for her research ‘Effects of Microplastic on the Intestinal and Liver Tissues and Gut Microbiome in Rats.’ Elyas Al Subhi, Omar Al Salmi and Aahid Al Hadrami from the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department, Sultan Qaboos University, Muscat, Oman finished third for the research entitled ‘Innovative Approach for Recovering Waste Heat of Vehicle Exhaust Gases into Power for Cooling Applications.’

QU-YSC seeks to provide opportunities to develop scientific research skills for young researchers from Qatar and worldwide that would enrich their scientific careers and set them on the path of research creativity. Therefore, the Center organises the annual Youth Research Forum to develop a culture of scientific research among young people, affirming their role as change leaders through research and innovation.
