Washington: Part of the avenue beside the Russian embassy in Washington will be renamed Boris Nemtsov Plaza for the Russian opposition member murdered in 2015 in Moscow, authorities said.

A resolution passed Tuesday by the city council in Washington, DC, was adopted unanimously by the 13 councilors (11 Democrats and 2 independents). Congress has authority over the affairs of the federal capital, and could oppose.

An official ceremony and plaque dedication at the square is scheduled for February 27, for the third anniversary of the assassination of the opposition figure, local media quoted city officials as saying.

The Russian embassy is located on Wisconsin Avenue, a major thoroughfare in the northwest area of the capital.

Relations between the United States and Russia are very tense, with a special prosecutor investigating since May 2017 Moscow's interference in the November 2016 presidential election and to determine if there has been collusion between Donald Trump's campaign and Russia.

Trump repeatedly denied "collusion" including on Wednesday.
