DOHA: Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) has received a QR400,000 donation from the General Directorate of Endowments (Awqaf) at the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, as a contribution to its relief efforts to help the displaced people in Syria survive the severe weather.
The funds covered part of the cost of QRC’s winter relief programme to help Eastern Ghouta’s 2,196,000 population, who suffer difficulty securing their least needs due to lack of money; scarcity of food, medical, and relief supplies; and the destruction of their local crops under Snowstorms Huda and Yohan.
The programme involved distributing winter assistance worth QR1,095,200, including 25,600 blankets and 384 tonnes heating wood, to 6,400 families, instead of 4,000 families as previously planned. Each family received four blankets and 60kg wood.
Saleh bin Ali Al Mohannadi, QRC Secretary-General, thanked Awqaf for its generous donation.
“QRC has never declined to work hard to relieve our brothers affected by the four-year Syrian crisis, utilising its legal capacity as a globally recognised humanitarian organisation whose vehicles, facilities, and staff are protected under international laws and conventions to deliver humanitarian assistance into Syria, a capacity that distinguishes QRC from other charitable organizations in Qatar,” he said.
Mohamed Lahdan Al Mohannadi, Awqaf Assistant General Director, said, “The donation was allocated from an endowment bank for QRC’s Warm Winter Campaign. This assistance is important because it is targeted towards the displaced inside Syria, while most of the international assistance goes to Syrian refugees in neighbouring countries.”
