'54% of all household, industrial waste being recycled'

Doha: Minister of Municipality H E Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie and  Minister of Environment and Climate Change H E Sheikh Dr. Faleh bin Nasser bin Ahmed bin Ali Al Thani reviewed Qatar’s efforts in establishing a culture of sustainability and waste recycling. 

This was highlighted during a panel discussion on the second and final day of 3rd Recycling Towards Sustainability Conference and Exhibition.

During the panel discussion, Dr. Al Subaie stressed Qatar's commitment, under the leadership of  the Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to the circular economy sector, sustainability and recycling, and its keenness to develop it. The Minister of Municipality noted that the Ministry today recycles approximately 54% of the waste generated from household, commercial and industrial waste in the country, and converts it into energy or fertilizer, indicating that about 153 plots of land have been allocated for waste recycling and designated for the private sector, including factories and companies concerned in order to encourage these entities to recycle waste in all its forms.

Minister of Environment and Climate Change H E Sheikh Dr. Faleh bin Nasser Al Thani said the ministry is interested in recycling waste as part of Qatar National Strategy for Environment and Climate Change 2030. He said that the Ministry of Municipality is a key partner in the implementation of this strategy.

He explained that the role of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in recycling operations is a supervisory role, as it works to implement the aforementioned strategy in an integrated manner, indicating that the use of waste, whether organic, natural or industrial. He said National Waste Directory stresses the necessity of reusing about 40-50% of recycled materials in construction.
