Doha: Total successfully organised a seminar on ‘Energy Transition: the Long Journey ahead’ for employees and key partners. The presentation welcomed over 30 attendees at Total’s research centre (TRC-Q) located in Qatar Science and Technology Park.
The lecture was delivered by Dr Philippe Tanguy, Deputy Chief Scientist for Total who is the current Vice-President of the World Council of Chemical Engineering. Among others, he founded the Research Centre in Industrial Flow Processes at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal.
The topic of energy transition is of increasing interest indeed; there is a need to transform the present energy system into a more sustainable mix using renewable energy sources, requiring an increase in the energy efficiency and greenhouse gas mitigation measures. The development of technological innovation in these fields is central to the success of the energy shift.
Dr Tanguy gave a comparision of the strategies followed by several leading countries to make their energy system more sustainable. He also provided a glimpse of some key challenges to make the energy transition a success.
The energy transition is clearly country-specific as it depends on the local available resources and the system in place (such as the energy mix, infrastructure, typology of consumption). Therefore, a solution needs to be devised in each case with long-term objectives and financial scenarios.
