DOHA: The US will send an interagency delegation to the 13th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (Crime Congress) in Doha to engage with civil society, academic experts and government leaders from across the globe in the pursuit of criminal justice and good governance.
The team will be led by Ambassador Luis Arreaga, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL) and Special Representative of the Secretary of State to the UN Congress, said a statement issued by the US Department of State yesterday.
The congress will include a notable broad array of experts in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice, with NGO leaders, academics and journalists joining diplomats and other government officials at various sessions.
The US team looks forward to discussing the nexus between crime prevention, the rule of law, and sustainable development with participants from all sectors.
US goals include working with counterparts from around the world to advance international cooperation in fighting transnational crime — including promoting implementation of UN Conventions against Transnational Organised Crime (UNTOC) and Corruption (UNCAC) — and supporting steps to integrate criminal justice into the wider UN agenda, particularly in the areas of sustainable development and improved governance, said the statement.
