Qatar Exchange index jumps 1.75pc after MSCI upgrade

DOHA: Qatar Exchange's benchmark index propelled to a four and a half year high of 9,517.95 points with a gain of 163.45 points or 1.75 percent at close of trading Wednesday afternoon.

The jump in index is attributable to expectations of more inflow of foreign investments following the Qatari bourse' upgradation to Emerging Market status from Frontier Market.

QE was Tuesday upgraded by Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) Emerging Market index that measures equity market performance in global emerging markets.

The volume of the shares traded increased to 17,892,123 from 14,588,370 on Tuesday while the value of shares increased to QR987,480,435.38 from QR487,252,838.29.

Among the top gainers were Qatar National Bank which was up 4.02 percent to QR155.40, Industries Qatar rose 2.66 percent to QR166.20, Commercial Bank of Qatar gained 1.13 percent to QR71.30 and Electricity and Water up by 6.15 percent to QR157.10.

The banking and financial sector index was up 0.93 points while consumer goods and services sector index was down 0.13 points.

The industrial sector added 2.23 points while insurance gained 0.04 points. (QNA)
