DOHA: All the newly constructed underpasses on the Salwa Road will be partially operational from tomorrow, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) said yesterday.
The underpasses from the Al Asiri flyover to the Industrial Area direction will be open for traffic from tomorrow, while in the opposite direction, two out of four lanes will be functional from March 29.
This will allow vehicles travelling to and from Industrial Area and Faleh Bin Nasser interchanges to bypass all traffic signals.
The two lanes will match the number of operational lanes at the beginning and the end of the underpasses to ensure smooth traffic.
Diverting traffic to the underpass comes in preparation for starting works on the main road and service roads along the side of the underpass, without affecting traffic, Ashghal said in a statement.
“The partial opening of all underpasses on Salwa Road is a testament to the steady progress being made on one of the most strategic projects in Qatar, that will allow shorter routes, better connectivity and, most importantly, more convenience to commuters,” said the statement.
The project will deliver about seven kilometres of dual carriageway along the alignment of the existing road. The main line will feature eight lanes, four lanes in each direction separated by a median with continuous service roads, as well as four two-level interchanges.
Providing a strategic corridor between Doha and the Saudi Arabian border, the Salwa Road project is an integral part of Ashghal’s Expressway Programme.
The programme will deliver more than 30 major road projects across Qatar, including new and upgraded freeways, expressways and arterial roads, a new orbital highway and truck route as well as substantial upgrades to existing roads.
