Doha: A regional training course on human rights concepts and mechanisms for Kuwaiti diplomats in GCC countries started here yesterday.
The five-day course is being co-organised by Qatari National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) and Geneva Institute for Human Rights (GIHR) and is aimed at establishing and promoting the concept of human rights within the diplomatic corps.
Addressing the opening session of the training course , Deputy Chairman of the NHRC, Dr Yousuf Obaidan, said that human rights and relevant basic freedoms are of local, regional and international significance.
The better the State respects and safeguards human rights, the better it is placed on both regional and world maps, he noted, stressing that it is shared responsibility of the international society to promote and safeguard human rights.
Eight Kuwaiti diplomats working at US embassies in GCC countries are attending the course.
The Kuwaiti Ambassador in Doha, Meteb Saleh Al Mutotah, underscored that human rights issue is significantand is the top priority of Kuwait. He said the Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs seeks to promote and establish the concept of human rights within the diplomatic corps.
The ministry has developed an ambitious plan meant to promote the role and effort of Kuwait in the domain of human rights, he added. QNA
