DOHA: Qatar University’s Department of Health Sciences (DHS) recently organised a presentation on AIDS awareness for its students. ‘Focus, Partner and Achieve: An AIDS-free generation’ discussed major issues related to the disease.
Participants from Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and the Qatar General Medical Commission joined DHS faculty members and students to hear lectures by HMC Infectious Diseases Senior Consultant and Chairman of Alkhor Hospital Infection Control Committee Dr Yasser el Deeb, and the Medical Commission’s Chief of Laboratory Services, Dr Ahmed Ismail.
Dr el Deeb gave an insight into the HIV epidemic globally, regionally, and locally in terms of number of people affected. He also outlined the difference between HIV infection and AIDS, the stages of HIV infection and the “window period”, as well as prevention and treatment.
Dr Ismail also discussed guidelines and laboratory screening for HIV at the Commission.
