DOHA: The Libyan security forces in Benghazi arrested the killer of Ali Hassan Al Jaber, the Qatari cameraman of Al Jazeera who was shot dead on March 12 in 2011 as he was covering the Libyan revolts, Al Jazeera reported yesterday.
Al Jaber was shot dead in Al Hawaari area southwest Benghazi after the car carrying the Al Jazeera team came under intensive fire.
According to the report, the killer confessed to the crime and gave details of the plot to attack the Al Jazeera team. In his confession he disclosed that he was ordered by the Gaddafi regime to eliminate the entire Al Jazeera team.
Al Jaber was killed as he was returning to Benghazi from a nearby town after filing a report from an opposition protest.
Two people including Al Jaber were shot. Al Jaber was rushed to hospital, but did not survive. He was hit by three shots and was wounded through the heart.
Al Jaber, a Qatari national, was born in 1955 and received his bachelor and master’s degrees in cinematography from the Academy of Arts in Cairo. He was the director of CNBC Arabiya TV bureau in Qatar.
He also served as a supervisor in the National Olympic Committee between 2002 and 2005 and held the office of Head of Filming Section in Qatar Television for more than 20 years.
During his tenure, he produced a number of documentaries including one on Qatar and another on Kuwait titled “Plight and Tribulation”.
He was the first journalist killed in the Libyan conflict and his death had triggered a heated debate in Qatar about the safety of journalists in danger zones.
