DOHA/LIMA, PERU: Qatar and Peru yesterday decided to start negotiations to reach a bilateral agreement on avoidance of double taxation in an important move to promote the flow of foreign investments between the two countries.
The decision was taken during the official visit of the Emir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani to Peru yesterday, accompanied by the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister H E Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabor Al Thani and a high-ranking Qatari delegation.
The negotiations will start on March 19 and continue until March 21. Representatives of the Finance and Economy ministries of the two countries expressed their commitment to starting the negotiations scheduled to be held in Doha, the Qatar News Agency reported yesterday.
A series of bilateral agreements were signed during the visit, in the field of education, commerce, energy and mining, following talks held in Presidential Palace chaired by the Emir and Peruvian President Ollanta Humala Tasso.
The two sides discussed relations between the two countries and ways of enhancing them in all fields, and reviewed a number of regional and international issues of common concern.
After the talks, the Emir and the Peruvian President exchanged Orders and Decorations. The Emir presented President Ollanta with the Necklace of Independence, while President Ollanta presented the Emir with the Order of the Sun, which is the highest decoration in the Republic of Peru.
The Emir and the Peruvian President witnessed the signing of a number of agreements and memoranda of understanding (MoU) between the two countries.
The two sides signed a memorandum of understanding to start bilateral consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Peru, an agreement for cooperation in the legal field, another MoU in the field of education and higher education and scientific research, an agreement for cooperation and joint news exchange, and MoU in the field of mining.
A Memorandum of Understanding between the Qatar Chamber and the Chamber of Commerce of Peru, and memorandum of understanding on investment cooperation between Qatar Holding Company and private investment agencies in Peru were also signed on the occasion.
The Emir, the Prime Minister and the accompanying delegation attended a luncheon banquet hosted by President Ollanta Humala Tasso in their honour.
The Emir later left the Republic of Peru after a two-day official visit on his way to the Republic of Colombia. The Emir and the delegation accompanying him were seen off on departure at Callao Air Base Airport by Peru’s Foreign Minister Rafael Roncagliolo, Qatar’s Ambassador to Peru Jamal Nasser Al Bader and Peru Ambassador to Qatar Julio Florian.
