Doha: Qatar Foundation’s National Sport Day activities were held yesterday in solidarity with the people affected from the recent earthquakes in Turkiye and Syria.

A series of activities were held by Qatar Foundation at different venues of the Education City to inspire the community to make long-lasting lifestyle changes.

Sheikha Moza and other dignitaries also toured the events, spoke with some of the participants and watched them enjoying the activities.

The ‘Walk For a Cause’ was held in collaboration with Qatar Charity. There were also donation desks at separate locations across the Education City.

Some residents talking to The Peninsula appreciated the initiative saying it had given more significance to National Sport Day activities.

“Every year we come to the Education City for National Sport Day and we find the activities more interesting. However, this year it gives us more satisfaction because of the arrangements made to contribute to supporting the affected people in Turkiye and Syria,” said Mohamed Hassim, a long-term resident working in the travel industry.

Echoing the same sentiments, Abir, teacher at a private school in Doha, said, “I’m grateful for the opportunity Qatar Foundation has created.”

Qatar Foundation’s National Sport Day events had a key focus on active and healthy lifestyles for women and girls.  The day-long activities attracted hundreds of sports enthusiasts.

“We took part in many activities and enjoyed playing dart board, football, and golf,” said Ayesha, aged 11, and her brother.

A fun triathlon ‘Try-a-Tri’ aimed to create awareness about the sport and encourage more participation. It was open to anybody who wished to try the sport, with adult and children’s categories.

At the Ceremonial Green Spine in Education City, Qatar Foundation schools organised an array of exciting sports activities. Tariq Bin Ziad School presented traditional Qatari games, while students from Qatar Academy for Science and Technology demonstrated Qatari athlete Mutaz Barshim’s high jump, and students from Qatar Leadership Academy showed their mastery of jiu-jitsu.

Qatar Olympic Committee, the main partner of Qatar Foundation's National Sport Day activities, hosted the Women and Girls Football Tournament at the Education City Stadium.

The Education City Stadium also saw teams compete in a functional fitness challenge made up of burpees, squats, mountain climbers, etc, and using equipment such as rowing machines and medicine balls.

Ensuring that all events are accessible to people of all ages and abilities Qatar Foundation’s Ability Friendly Program and Renad Academy hosted games of basketball and football.
