DOHA: The special committee dealing with traffic jams has identified six traffic hotspots in the city and is currently working on solutions.
The committee was set up by the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) in 2009 to study traffic congestions across the country and propose solutions.
It includes representatives from Ashghal, Traffic Department, Lekhwiya, Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning, Kahramaa and Ooredoo.
Design is ready for a project to ease the congestion on the February 22 street on the D-Ring Road leading to Al Asiri Tunnel and Gharafa bridge, a local Arabic daily reported yesterday, quoting Eng Yousuf Abdul Rahman Al Emadi, head of the committee.
Most of the exit and entry points on the highway witness heavy traffic jams during peak hours.
He said the design will soon be submitted to the higher authorities for approval.
The committee has also proposed to develop the Al Bustan road from Al Waab intersection until the Mukafahat roundabout on the Rayyan road, with three lanes on each direction and a traffic light near Lahkwiya headquarters.
The intersection near the Villaggio that remains closed with cement barricades would be reopened to provide easy access to and from the shopping mall.
Al Furqan roundabout in Muaider close to the Watnaan Mall will be converted into an intersection to ease the flow of traffic on the main roads. Al Manaseer intersection will be expanded very soon, and the single lane road from Al Sailiya toward the Industrial Area and the Salwa-Abu Samra road will be developed with two lanes in each direction.
Al Markhiya road extending from Dahl Al Hammam roundabout to Landmark mall will be developed with three lanes in each direction and new service roads to the mall will be built supported with two roundabouts.
