Sidra appoints inaugural chair for psychiatry

DOHA: Sidra Medical and Research Center yesterday announced the appointment of Dr Muhammad Waqar Azeem (pictured) as its inaugural chair in the Department of Psychiatry.
Dr Azeem will be responsible for setting new standards for world-class patient and family care, medical education and research in psychiatry.
He will also hold the position of Founding Chair of Child Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar (WCMC-Q).
Through these appointments, he will play an integral role in improving mental health services for children and families in Qatar and the region.
Dr Azeem joins from Albert J Solnit Children’s Center in the US, where he held the position of chief of psychiatry and medical director. He also served as associate clinical professor at Yale Child Study Center/Yale University School of Medicine and associate residency training programme director for Yale Child Study Center/ Solnit Center Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship.
Dr Ziyad Hijazi, Acting Chief Medical Officer, Sidra said, “Dr Azeem has an exceptional background in psychiatric clinical care and research, and will be instrumental in ensuring that mental health services we bring to children and women of Qatar and the region represent the highest possible standards of patient care.”
