Doha: Qatar Meteorology Department (QMD) announced that the Al-Sarayat period has begun.
Locally known as Al-Sarayat, this seasonal weather period starts during the last third of March and extends until mid-May. It is characterized by the rapid development of convective clouds within a short period of time, often followed by thundery rain that is mostly heavy in intensity and accompanied by active lightning.
The weather conditions during this period may also include strong downdraft winds that can cause rising dust in some areas of the country.
QMD further explained that the phenomenon is called Al-Sarayat because it usually occurs intermittently during the evening and night hours.
