BIRMINGHAM: The cockpit voice and flight data recorders were retrieved yesterday from the wreckage of the UPS cargo jet that crashed early Wednesday on approach to Birmingham, Alabama’s airport, the National Transportation Safety Board said.
The black boxes will be sent to NTSB headquarters in Washington for evaluation of possible clues about the cause of the fiery crash of the United Parcel Service aircraft, in which two pilots were killed, agency spokesman Eric Weiss said.
Trans-Siberian railway closed
MOSCOW: Russian Railways on Thursday closed a section of the legendary Trans-Siberian railway because if serious flooding, potentially delaying a train en route from Moscow to the far eastern city of Vladivostok.
Flood water washed away some of the stone ballast supporting the track in the far eastern Amur region (around 7,500 kilometres from the capital) after a nearby river reached a “critical level”, Russian Railways said in a statement on its website.
Landslide Keita win confirmed
BAMAKO: Mali announced Ibrahim Boubacar Keita as its new leader yesterday after confirming that the ex-prime minister had won a landslide victory in a presidential poll in the conflict-scarred nation.
Figures for Sunday’s second-round ballot released on live television by the interior ministry showed Keita won an overwhelming 77.6 percent of the vote, with his rival Soumaila Cisse trailing on 22.4 percent.
