LAHORE: Infrastructure and logistics are a major hurdle to growth of bilateral trade between Pakistan and India, said a commerce ministry official.
This is despite the fact that different agreements had been signed by the two countries for improving rail cargo. However, these agreements could not be implemented in letter and spirit.
According to the official, inadequate infrastructure and logistics are a major impediment to trade, which severely affects the trade potential. “Railway services have deteriorated even though trade volumes have increased,” he said. “Indian wagons have not been plying between the two countries since 2009.”
On the other hand, only Pakistani wagons have been carrying cargo, which places undue pressure on the rail cargo movement, he added.
