The role of sport and physical activity in ensuring a healthy lifestyle will be on show at Aspire over the next two days as thousands of students from Qatar compete across 11 sports as part of the 7th SOP finals that are organised annually by Qatar Olympic Committee and the Supreme Education Council. Maersk Oil Qatar is the exclusive sponsor of the Schools Olympic Program.
As part of Maersk Oil Qatar’s SOP sponsorship, a series of healthy lifestyle videos featuring high-profile Olympians and sportspersons will be filmed during finals day to underline the importance of wise food choices and exercise. The Action on Diabetes screening bus will also be positioned outside the Aspire Dome entrance to test adults and raise awareness of the dangers of diabetes, in addition to an information booth at the SOP Boulevard inside the Aspire Dome. This year’s schools Olympic program is expected to receive more than 26,000 students taking part in the activities, which aims to bring the ‘action for Qatar’ to life.
Maersk Oil Qatar’s Deputy Managing Director, Sheikh Faisal Al Thani, said: ‘Through the Action for Qatar social investment programme, Maersk Oil Qatar is committed to high-quality partnerships that provide real, long-term impacts for Qatar. Our exclusive three-year sponsorship of the Schools Olympic Program is a fantastic example of this.
“I am particularly proud that Maersk Oil Qatar, Action on Diabetes and the Schools Olympic Program are working together to highlight the importance of healthy lifestyles in enabling sporting and academic success and in preventing diabetes. Congratulations and good luck to all the students taking part in the SOP finals.”
Qatar’s first female to compete at an Olympics, swimmer Nada Arkaji, will feature in the healthy lifestyle videos being filmed on Friday inside the Aspire Dome, along with other prominent sportspeople and chef Zarmig Halladjian. Once completed, the healthy lifestyle videos will form part of a wider awareness programme in Qatar by Action on Diabetes.
Olympic swimmer Nada Arkaji said: “I know through my own experiences, both in participating at the Schools Olympic Program as a student and then at the London Olympics, what a positive effect sport and a healthy lifestyle can have on the lives of young people. I am delighted to join Maersk Oil Qatar and Action on Diabetes in filming these healthy lifestyle videos that I hope will encourage more people to eat right and be active.”
