DOHA: A research presentation by Qatar University (QU) pharmacy students on blood glucose control in patients with acute coronary syndromes at Heart Hospital in Qatar won second place at the recent 20th Annual Dubai International Pharmaceuticals and Technology Conference.
Fourth-year students Masa Habra, Ibtihal Abdallah and Eman Al Mekaty won Second Best Oral Presentation over 56 presentations from pharmacy colleges in Qatar, Ukraine, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, India and Pakistan.
College of Pharmacy took part for the fifth time in the student conference and its students won top places the fifth time. The one-year research project was funded by the Undergraduate Research Experience Programme (UREP) of Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF).
Under the supervision of college faculty member Dr Kerry Wilby, students looked at 283 retrospective patients charts at Heart Hospital’s Coronary Care Unit to characterise how blood glucose levels were controlled. Findings revealed levels of diabetic patients to be greater than internationally-accepted standards on admission and throughout their hospital stay.
The research suggests that tighter glucose controls for admitted patients are needed and stronger diabetes management for out-patients.
On students’ achievement, college Dean, Dr Ayman El Kadi, said, “Participating in these forums helps our students build confidence and experience and provides them with opportunities to interact with peers from around the world and gain more insight into the profession from pharmacy and medical professionals and members of the pharmacy community.” The Peninsula
