DOHA: The number of students in government and private schools in Qatar reached 232,000 in the academic year 2012-2013, up 5.5 percent compared to the previous year, according to a report.
Among administration and academic staff at schools, 77 percent were women, according to the chapter on education released by the Ministry of Developing, Planning and Statistics yesterday.
It released statistics on students and schools together with data on university students, and students on scholarships at universities in Qatar and abroad. It also includes data on students enrolled at adult education and literacy centres.
Among total students at schools, 58 percent were male and 49 percent female. An average of 24 students were in each class between grade one and three. Teachers were available at a ratio of one for 10 students.
The number of administrative and teaching staff at government and private schools reached 30,000, up eight percent compared to the previous year.
The chapter shows that the number of students at independent universities and colleges reached 21,000 in 2012-2013.
Male students at government universities constituted 70 percent of total students, whereas female students constituted 64 percent of total students at government and private universities. The total administrative and academic staff were 3,000 and 47 percent of them were females.
The total number of students on scholarships in Qatar and abroad reached 2,200. Number of students on scholarships at universities and colleges in Qatar constituted 54 percent of total students on scholarships, whereas females constituted 53 percent of total students on scholarships in Qatar and abroad.
