Geneva: Kuwait yesterday commended Qatari efforts in promoting, protecting and persevering human rights, at the United Nations Human Rights Council UNHRC.
Qatar’s efforts are clear from the review of its second periodical report on its role in protection and promotion of human rights, the Kuwaiti Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva, Ambassador Jamal Al Ghoneim, said in a speech to the Council.
The Qatari report, presented to the Council by Assistant Foreign Minister for International Cooperation Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, shows that there is political will to promote and protect human rights, Al Ghoneim added.
He was quoted by Kuwait News Agency as lauding Qatari institutions’ adoption of sustainable measures to deal with UNHRC recommendations since the delivery of its report in April 2014. It reflects Qatar’s desire to abide by objectives and principles of the UNHRC, he said.
Al Ghoneim also applauded Qatar’s acceptance of two Kuwaiti recommendations on the need to continue and strengthen relations with the UN high commissioner for human rights and to go ahead with its humanitarian actions.
The Council reviews the human rights situation in all countries every four years to determine the extent of improvement and help countries that have not managed to meet the required standards, he noted.
