Mexico City: The death toll from the devastating earthquake hit the Mexican capital and its environs has risen to 140.
Dozens were also injured, and buildings in some Mexican cities were collapsed as well.
Mexico City airport was suspended after the earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale, and buildings were evacuated in different parts of the city.
At least 64 people were killed in the Morelos state south of the capital, while 29 others were killed in the Puebla state, 36 in Mexico City and 11 in the states of Guerrero and Mexico City, a spokesman for the civil protection teams said.
Mayor of Mexico City Miguel Angel Mancera said that rescue forces were working in dozens of damaged buildings in about 44 locations, adding that the earthquake also cut off power and communication lines to at least two million people.
Rescue teams are continuing their search for children trapped under the rubble of a school that collapsed in the quake. People are feared trapped under the rubble of buildings. Rescue teams rushed to the hardest hit areas.
The epicenter of the quake was near Puebla state, 51 kilometers below the surface of the earth, the US Geological Survey said.
Earlier this month, an earthquake measuring 8.1 on the Richter scale killed at least 100 people in Mexico.
The earthquake occurred while a seismic training was taking place in Mexico City on the 32nd anniversary of an earthquake that killed 10,000 people.
