DOHA: Qatar University’s (QU) College of Engineering has partnered with Silatech and Occidental Petroleum Qatar (Oxy Qatar) to create ‘Nasmou’, a personal development programme to help Qatari students transition into the workplace.
Over 30 senior students from the college will participate in the first pilot workshop from February 8 to 12.
An agreement was signed by Dr Mazen Hasna, QU Vice-President and Chief Academic Officer, Dr Tarik M Yousef, CEO, Silatech, and Stephen Kelly, President and General Manager, Oxy Qatar.
Delivered by the UK-based leadership development organisation Common Purpose Charitable Trust, Nasmou will take students out of the classroom to explore real-life experiences in the workplace.
Students will be oriented on techniques and exercises and mentored by Oxy Qatar executives to develop skills, competencies and mindset needed for a successful career.
Nasmou will help them better understand their emotions and thrive in a multicultural environment. On its completion, selected students will be offered internship at Oxy Qatar to strengthen and practise skills they gained during the workshop.
Dr Hasna said, “QU encourages collaboration with public and private sector entities in a way that boosts its development and output. Students are our main assets and the agreement holds to our resolve to graduate highly-qualified students who meet industry expectations.”
Dr Yousef said, “A large part of our focus at Silatech involves preparing young people for the workplace by helping make them more employable.
“Nasmou gives young people a taste of the working world and boost their employability. It exemplifies the type of partnership for youth between the private sector, academia and the NGO community needed in Qatar and the region,” he said.
“Programmes such as Nasmou provide students with an opportunity to experience and prepare for the workplace.
“We hope Nasmou will play a significant role in preparing students for their careers and help develop future leaders.
“We are confident that participants and employers will benefit from skills students will acquire and transfer to the workplace,” said Kelly.
