DOHA: Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) has signed an MoU with the Palestinian Ministry of Public Works and Housing to carry out a relief project worth $1.5m for Gaza people who lost their homes in Israeli attacks.
One hundred temporary homes will be built and furnished for families whose homes were destroyed in Beit Hanoun, northern Gaza.
The signing ceremony and a press conference were held at the ministry, attended by the Palestinian Minister of Public Works, Dr Mufeed Al Hasayna, the Director of QRC Office in Gaza, Dr Akram Nassar and representatives of the ministry and QRC.
Dr Al Hasayna praised Qatar’s support to the Palestinian people and said the project would alleviate the suffering of homeless families affected by the 50-day Israeli war, which demolished thousands of Palestinian homes and facilities.
He said the project is an urgent help for the displaced and pledged cooperation with QRC to complete it and protect the homeless during the winter.
“The project is the product of a fundraiser by the Maldivian people during the Israeli war. The money was given to QRC to start urgent relief projects in response to the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the enclave,” Dr Nassar said.
According to him, a budget of $1.5m was allocated to build 100 temporary homes for the displaced in Beit Hanoun, undertake infrastructure work to serve the sheltering centres; rehabilitate water and sewerage networks in Gaza and Jabalia by supplying maintenance tools for pumps, generators, and networks; and rehabilitate and build water wells.
“These temporary homes are not a replacement for large-scale reconstruction of Gaza to remove the impact of the war. The project aims to preserve human dignity and provide safe shelters for homeless families until their neighbourhoods are rebuilt,” he said.
He praised the Palestinian government, Palestinian Red Crescent and Beit Hanoun, Gaza, and Jabalia municipalities and relief agencies for providing information and technical support to launch the project and ensure compatibility between designs and user needs.
The project is expected to be completed with the distribution of homes to beneficiaries by this month-end. The Peninsula
