TOKYO--The US navy said Friday a cargo ship ran aground Friday off the island of Okinawa in southern Japan, although it caused no injuries or fuel spills.

The USNS Sgt. Matej Kocak became stranded at around 0230 GMT (11:30 am) and was six nautical miles off the coast of Uruma, according to the US navy.

None of the 131 people aboard was injured, the navy said, adding that the ship was not leaking fuel and not receiving water.

Japanese officers and divers will investigate the situation Friday, a Japan Coast Guard spokesman said.

The crew were able to stay on board the ship, the US navy added.

"The US navy is working closely with Japanese authorities to assess the situation and determine the best course of action to refloat the vessel," the navy said.

"Tugs are on scene stabilising the vessel and assessing the situation," it said.
