ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has nearly completed external construction of a fourth reactor building at the Khushab nuclear complex that produces plutonium for the country’s nuclear weapons programme, according to a US think tank.
The Institute for Science and International Security, which has used commercial satellite imagery to monitor developments at the Khushab complex for years, said in a report that images from November 1 clearly show that “the external construction of the fourth reactor building appears nearly complete”.
The Khushab complex, 200km south of Islamabad, is dedicated to the production of plutonium for nuclear weapons.
Military chief defies terrorism
PESHAWAR: Despite reiterating full support to the ongoing government-led peace process with the Taliban militants, Pakistan’s new army chief General Raheel Sharif yesteday vowed to not tolerate any more terrorist attacks.
During his visit to the Corps Headquarters in Peshawar, he emphasised that terrorist attacks will not be tolerated and will be responded effectively, said a statement issued by the ISPR.
Ruling out military action against proscribed Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan as its first preference, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s government has promised to persuade insurgents to lay down their weapons through peace negotiations.
Probe begins over 1990 polls
ISLAMABAD: A probe has begun into the distribution of money among politicians by Pakistan’s intelligence agencies in their bid to prevent Benazir Bhutto’s party from winning the 1990 general elections, a media report said.
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) probe commenced on Friday. Air Marshal (retd) Asghar Khan was the first to appear before an agency committee to record his statement, the Dawn newspaper reported.
Asghar Khan had filed the petition in 1996, accusing the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) of financing several politicians during the 1990 elections to create the Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI) group and prevent Bhutto’s Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) from winning.
